Abstract

Friar Juan de Jnterián de Ayala 's trcatise El Pintor Christianus y Erudito, with its clearly didactic aim, is a true reflection of Counter-Reformation social views, especially in its discussion of the role of the female figure in painting and sculpture. Taking this work as our starting-point, we discuss severa! representations of the female figure in the roles of daughter, wife and mother.
