Abstract

As an instance of the relationship between the cinema and literature we offer an analysis of the film version of Hemingway's novel To have and have not, published in 1938, which Howard Hawks made in 1944. The contents of film and book are compared, and structural similarities and differences, as well as those of place, historical epoch, characters, themes and narrative style, are analysed.
