Abstract

The religious iconography of the baroque period in Spain, and especially that dealing with the Nativity, had its origins not only in literary works and treatises, but also in a wide range of sources, particularly those in the field of mysticism. lt is precisely here that we can see how the philosophy underlying the baroque came ever closer to realism, a full century before this was accepted within the artistic tradition. The present paper offers an overview of these texts, in search of new information about our baroque plastic arts.
