Abstract

The aim of this paper is to study an importan! aspect of artistic life in the Argentina of the first quarter of the 20'h century. We discuss the need for economic independence felt by local painters, whose work was deeply influenced by the fluctuations of the market. The enthusiasm of many collectors for European painting led to many local artists, working under difficult economic conditions, being frequently passed over.
