Abstract

During the 1880s a debate took place in Spain over the use of ironwork in architecture, and at this time, several churches with metallic columns were built in the province of Almería, including the parish churches of Lubrín and Arboleas, and the Company of Mary church in Almería itself. lf we bear in mind the resistance shown by contemporary architects to the use of iron in churches, a study of these churches allows us to throw light on one of the most unusual and least studied aspects of 191h century Spanish architecture.
