Abstract

During the 181h Century the city of Jerez de la Frontera enjoyed a period of economic and social splendor that created a wish for grater autonomy. In the ecclesiastical field the Town council, together with and the chapter of the Collegiate church asked for of the original «asidonense» (of Medina Sidonia), dating from the time of the Goths, to be restored. To this end, the chapter as well as the local historians confused medieval with modern history, thus distorting historical texts. In this context, they reinterpreted sorne moorish stars decorating the four gateways into of the city.
