Abstract

This paper offers a brief reflection on the free-standing tabernacles to be found in high altars in Granada churches. The authorship of one of the most attractive and interesting of these baroque tabernacles is established. Previously attributed to Hurtado Izquierdo, the tabernacle is now shown to have been the work of the carver Nicolás de Yilloslada. Yilloslada, a little-known artist, is seen to be of considerable stature and this discovery should lead to a revision of the excessively rigid classifying of Granada artists and workshops, which produces inaccurate generalisations.
