Abstract

Artistic reputation in the Modern Age has become a phenomenon which is largely controlled and consciously planned. In this study we discuss an example of this: the reputation achieved by the Bolognese painter
Agostino Mitelli, largely posthumous, since it was mainly the result of his early death in Madrid in August 1660. Severa! contemporary literary and poetic documents are examined. These documents ali date from before
1667, when ll Prencipe, devoted to the memory of the painter and key element in the establishing of his reputation, was published.
