Abstract

In this article we present a book of drawings by Cándido Fernández Mazas wbich probably remained unpublished due to the circumstances of the last months of the Spanish Civil War. We discuss the personality of the artist, an ill-fated figure of the avant-garde of Galicia, who was politically involved in Trotskyite and anarchist movements. The value of this series of drawings as political satire and caricature is examined in the context of the use of politically committed art as propaganda. The aims of these works are illustrated, and their content and artistic sources are discussed. These are quite original compared with other Republican war drawings.
