Abstract

In this study we examine images of old age in Renaissance and Baroque painting, where typical stereotypes of men and women are to be found. Old age is seen in opposition to youth and elderly women are relentlessly pictured as old bags, often vicious procuresses, as opposed to men who are seen as reaching a peak of maturity and wisdom in old age.
