Abstract

We are still in need of a serious study of works by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in collections in Spain. The present paper analyses information from a document found in the State Archives in Florence which indicates that in 1661 the artist was working on two pieces which were to be sent to Philip IV and Mariana of Austria as a gift from Niccoló Ludovisi, Prince of Piombino and then Viceroy of Aragon. Further information is also supplied on other works by Bernini which came to Spain during the 17th century and the circumstances in which this occurred.
