Abstract

In this paper we offer an interpretation of the idea of beauty among the Jews, based on the Biblical texts and on a specific world view. The influence which these exerted on the medieval and Renaissance Christian concept of emanation is discussed. At the same time we show how the peculiarly Hebrew formulation of the relationship between Man and Nature and its Creator led to the production of a profoundly symbolic art which was to serve as the basis on which later Christian practice developed in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
