Abstract

In the sanctuary devoted to the Virgen de la Piedad in Baza there is a baroque niche made in 1689 by Juan López de Robles and probably decorated at the beginning of the 18'" century. The walls are ornamented with images on two main topics: the mutual protection provided by the Virgen de la Piedad and the Spanish monarchy, and the emphasis on the Order of the Merced as an image of the mystic vine. The present study examines both the historical artistic aspects of the construction of the sanctuary and the iconography and the symbolic message expressed in the ornamented niche.
