Abstract

During the second part of the l 7'h century the figure of José Risueño ( 1665-1732) was a prominent one in baroque art in Granada. A portrait of Saint Theresa of Ávila by Risueño was recently discovered in a prívate collection in France. This portrait, signed and dated in 1695 is the earliest known painting done in Risuei'ío's career. The Carmelite foundre's portrait here analysed is a magnificent example of José Risueños' great talen!, who was admired by the Archbishop Martín de Ascargorta. Of great beauty, colourful and composition, it has flemish inspiration with possible influenccs in models of Peter Paul Rubens.
