Abstract

At an international leve!, cultural routes or itineraries constitute at the present time one of the most popular ways of experiencing our cultural heritage and fulfill the aspirations of many cultural institutions. The result of this phenomenon has been an uncritical and chaotic profusion of routes and itineraries, which has in turn led to great confusion as to what the essential characteristics of such routes should be, if they are to provide genuinely cultural experiences. The present research paper aims to clarify this confusion and to establish, by means of a careful analysis of these characteristics, the different types of cultural itineraries available world-wide.
