Abstract

The founding of the Monastery of the Conception should be seen in the context of the rise in the grandeur of the Dominican Order in the Kingdom of Jaén during the I 61h century, when a great number of convents and monasteries were built. Among these was the monastery founded by Catalina. de Berrio, who invested her whole fortune in achieving this dream. She conceived of it as a great religious monument which would provide her and her lineage with the fame she so much desired and as a place where she and other women of her class could find an honourable home.
