Abstract

Among El Greco greatest canvases —not only by its size but because its historical importance— an special place should be reserved to The Martyrdom of St Maurice and the Theban Legion. Commisioned by king Philip II and not accepted as an altarpiece work for the church at the monastery of San Lorenzo at the Escorial, it is still awaiting explanation for some of its features. In this essay, through a new analysis of its textual and graphic sources, new answers will be attempted to some of its problems.
