Abstract

One of the consequences of the establishing of a liberal system in Spain after 1833 was the promoting of public monuments. Monuments and memorials were erected in public streets and squares, and these were to spread the idea of heroic virtue among the public. Thus not only concepts and political figures were represented but also other historical personages, both past and present. The first public monument erected in Granada, dedicated to the memory of the famous actor, Isidro Máiquez, dates from 1839 and was proposed and built by the artist Julián Romea.
