Abstract

José Álvarez Cubero arrived in Granada in 1791, to register as a student in the School of Drawing. For the following two years he was a student of Jaume Folch and Fernando Marín, lecturers in sculpture. In 1793, after being awarded several monthly prizes he requested a certificate of studies which would enable him to continue his studies in the Academy of St. Ferdinand. After registering in 1794 he began a successful career during which he would travel to Paris and later to Rome, where he joined the workshop of one of the most important sculptors of the time, Antonio Canova.
