Abstract

In this paper we illustrate the relationship between the humanistic education which Luis Hurtado de Mendoza, 2nd Marquis of Mondéjar received and his well-known patronage of literature and the arts. Throughout his life Luis Hurtado de Mendoza was deeply interested in literary and aesthetic matters. He learnt Greek, compiled a valuable library in Granada, helped writers and humanists and patronized important works of art. His most important contribution was in the building of Charles the Fifth’s palace in the Alhambra, the style of which owes much to the classicizing taste and the decisions taken by the marquis.
