Abstract

This article, based on the analysis of documents in Arabic, discusses the value of andalusí poetry and music as disciplines that mutually contribute to the context of the Granada community during the Islamic period. We also present a checklist of prominent figures born in Granada or who had a close relation with the city, together with an account of their contributions to the art of the time. Contemporary dance and popular and religious festivities, both Christian and Moorish, are also studied and special attention is paid to those which emphasize the birth of the Prophet Mohammed. The Mawlid festivities that gave rise to a new style of poetry designed to be sung: al-qasida al-mawlidiyya, which represent an art which distinguishes Granada from other Andalusian cities.
