Abstract

This paper discusses the interpretations of Orpheus the musician as a symbol of eloquence and civilisation which were common in the Renaissance and Baroque periods. By means of commentaries on various emblems and allegories we show the origins of this facet of Orpheus the musician, his identification with the figure of the prince and with the idea of good government and suggest possible reasons why the use of this image did not extend to the whole of Europe.
