Abstract

In the creation of a liberal State great importance was attached to commemorative projects, and one of the most expressive of these is the monument devoted to Mariana Pineda in Granada. It was the result of a long process (1836-1873) and this, together with the markedly ideological characteristics of the enterprise, led to its construction being irregular and intermittent, as a result of the prevailing contradictions in the public contract at that time. The work leads us back to our recent past, which still lives in popular memory, and, with its clearly patriotic purpose it is also extremely significant as the only 19th century monument in Spain dedicated to the memory of a heroine.
