Abstract

The influence of enlightened ideas held by members of the upper clergy in Spain led to a renewal of religious architecture towards the end of the 18th century, when the desire for devotional changes produced reforms in may dioceses of the country. The present article examines the repercussions of pastoral edicts delivered by Bishop Tavira in parishes of the Canary Islands and the changes introduced in churches in construction. These measures are contextualised and their influence on liturgical practice is analysed. In this context the forms in which the Eucharist was to be celebrated became essential factors in the restructuring of churches and presbyteries.
