Abstract

The cult of St. James, Slayer of the Moors in the 18th century and tolerated in the Enlightenment, continued to  be  an  object  of  devotion  encouraged  by  a  church  which  was  profoundly  engaged  in  the  Counter-Reformation.  In  Granada  this  iconographical   topic,  which  had  been  especially  signif icant  from  the  times  of  the Reconquista,  is to be seen in two 18th century sculptures: that in the Convent of the Commanders of Santiago and that in the church  dedicated  to Saint Anne  and Saint  Giles.  In this paper  we justify  our views  that these were the work of Torcuato Ruiz de Peral.
