Abstract

There is such ideological disparity between Abraham Bosse’s first treaty on engraving (1645) and the extended and revised edition by Ch. N. Cochin (1745), that we can virtually speak of two different works. In order to understand the conceptual gap between the two manuals, it is important to take into account that when the Academy of Fine Arts of Paris was founded, in the second half of the seventeenth century, there was in France a fundamental shift in thinking about art education and training, and about art in general.
