Abstract

In this paper we analyse the presence of the nobility in painting in Jaén during the 17th century, taking as our starting point a discussion of three painters whose degree of nobility is inversely proportional to the quality of their art. For the same logical reason they are scarcely known in the literature: Luis Bonifaz, practically unknown, Cristóbal Vela, on whom we provide some new information, and Sebastian Martínez, the best-known of the three and the finest artist.
