Abstract

In this paper we do not attempt to add yet another facet to the classic trilogy of the work of Alonso Cano —as painter, sculptor and architect— but rather to re-interpret his work from the contemporary viewpoint of the designer. This may well help to understand his polemical architectural achievement, relate it to his activity in the fields of altarpieces and internal decoration, and underline the importance of his architectural sketches from this standpoint. This gives a perspective which also throws light on other facets, such as his personal logotype, and his incursions into the field of engraving. It may even throw some light on his aptitude for sculpture and painting.
