Abstract

One of the most important series of works by Cano during his second period in Granada was the cycle of paintings on the life of the Virgin done for the Guardian Angel convent. The series was broken up after the Napoleonic invasion and only three of the nine canvases were recovered. There is now a fourth, The Coronation of the Virgin, kept in Kingston Lacy (Dorset, United Kingdom), was bought from the nuns in 1814 by William Bankes. We analyse the painting’s turbulent history, its dimensions, style and iconography.
