Abstract

Taking as his starting point Siloe and his Pardon gate at Granada cathedral, Andrés de Vandelvira designed the principal entry to the Church of our Saviour in Úbeda, converting it into a combination of portal and retable. This work proved to be the inspiration for a series of portals in Jaén, and served to introduce the style of the altarpiece as architecture in the province. In the province of Granada, however, and with the exception of the church of Guadahortuna, the Pardon portal did not exert the same influence: the parish churches here took as their models other portals of the Cathedral, and their retables took on an architectural function some time later.
