Abstract

From the 16th century on, The Canary Islands received a great number of marble works and all kinds of sculptures commissioned in Genoa. The present paper offers a new view of this development, analyzing historiographical precedents and previously unpublished documents. We give a detailed description of the tabernacle made by the sculptor Giuseppe Gaggini before 1823 for the parish church of La Orotava, and provide hitherto unused information on its creative, religious and commercial value, as a «product» of a particular epoch.
