Abstract

In this paper we examine the main characteristics of the musical drama Compendio sucinto de la revolución española (A brief compendium of the Spanish Revolution). This previously unpublished work deals with the Spanish War of Independence (1808-1814).It was written by Ramón Garay after the end of the war, and dedicated to King Ferdinand VII in 1815. It is essentially a piece of propaganda, designed to sing the praises of the Spaniards facing the Napoleonic troops and also to glorify the role played by the monarch and the established religion during the war years.
