Abstract

In mid-October 1668 the town of Granada celebrated the news of the beatification of the nun from Lima Rosa de Santa María. A great number of religious ceremonies and public spectacles were organized by the Dominicans of the Santa Cruz la Real Monastery, in order to spread the sense of devotion and involve the faithful in this important event. This paper attempts to recreate those days as reflected in written reports and discusses the images which formed part of the ephemeral decoration set up for the celebrations, among them the painting by Pedro Atanasio Bocanegra, their principal protagonist.
