Abstract

This paper offers an iconographic study of a series of monsters and strange beings which formed part of the imagery associated with the conquistadores, clergy and colonizers who took part in the «discovery» and conquest of America. These images have in turn been realized by the Bry workshop in the famous series America, also known as the Journeys to the West Indies (1590-1634).
