Abstract

One of the main characteristics of architecture in New Spain throughout its existence, is the strong influence of European architectural theory in general, and specifically that of the books written by the artist from Bologna, Sebastiano Serlio. We believe that the conditions in which this influence flourished have not yet been explained sufficiently. The aim of this paper is to determine the contexts in which Serlio’s influence appears most frequently in the viceroyalty; and give reasons for its existence even in those periods which are most difficult to explain.
