Abstract

This research work represents a critical attempt to address the concept of continuity in artistic thought based on the case study of a unique artistic work of its kind, the Matthew Barney Cremaster Cycle. It is a well-known artistic production, which has provoked a lot of debate and divided the opinions of the critics and the public, without arriving, however, to definitively conclude the author’s artistic process. The hypothesis that we handle is to contemplate the Cremaster Cycle as a kind of contemporary manifesto of the systems developed by the philosopher and free thinker Giordano Bruno (1548-1600), whose treatises on the cosmos, memory, imagination, magic and the image is condensed into a “magic memory machine” that could be a significant forerunner of Barney’s work.
