Abstract

The legislation on Spanish historical heritage in the time of the Republic proved to be inadequate as to the protection of buildings at the level of town and of province. This led to the authorities establishing a series of laws, general and specific in an attempt to superseded the monumentalist and exclusively conservationist legislation of those years. Of these ordinances, the most important were the lnstructions for the Defence of historie Buildings, promulgated about the 1960s. These involved the application of criteria, procedures and instruments based on town planning needs, though they nevertheless carne into conflict with current civic legislation.
