Abstract

Towards 1750 the scientific advances find way by the experimentation carried out by a series of inserted characters in a society that demanded it. It was suspected that electricity, which was a known phenomenon, and lightning could be the same thing and, in addition, could be managed and put at the service of the new man of the new state structures. The natural philosophy was born that was the dedication and explanation of the world from the observation of nature. Hence the explanation of the creation of lightning rods, a device invented by Benjamin Franklin and what was considered a first step to tame that nature. Parallel the painters of the time tend to be pictures, where these meteorological agents are the protagonists but, as artists, each one gave a sense to the service of his work: Benjamin West (1738-1820), Francesco Casanova (1727-1802), Gaspar Wolf (1735-1783), James Gillray (1757-1815), Samuel Colman (1780-1845), John Martin (1789-1854), Charles Deas (1818-1867), Maxim Nikiforovich Vorobiev (1787-1855), Evelyne De Morgan (1855-1919), etc.
