Abstract

Engraving in Granda towards the end of the 16th century: examples discovered in the Sacromonte and their reproduction.
In this study the writer reproduces and analyzes for the first time a document which is of great importance if we are to understand the situation of "sheet engraving" in Granada at the end of the 16th century. Due to the nature of the motifs reproduced, a cooper reproduction was essential, and this was a technique which had not as yet been used in Granada. This first 'emergency' reproduction was first undertaken by Alberto Fernández, a Granada silversmith. Later the need to spread, world-wide, the news of the discoveries fo Valparaiso Mountain, which were so important for the Catholic world of the time, brought about the arrival of the Dutch engraver Francisco Heyland, and with him the acme of the art of engraving in Granada began.
