Abstract

The iconography of 'Prudence" in 15th and 16th century Spain.
Taking as his starting point a representative selection of images from sculptures created in Spain in the 15th and 16th centuries, the author analyzes the iconography of the virtue of Prudence. This iconography is polymorphous and complex, given the wide range of its artistic components.
As a result of this analysis, the author claims that the iconography of this Virtue has its source in the philosophy of the Ancient World, but was profoundly affected by the assimilation and 'purification" effected by medieval theology.
