Abstract

In the present study we examine the presence of solutions which have their source in the Italian quattrocento tradition -especially in projects designed by the architect Luciano Laurana- in background scenes painted by Pedro Berruguete.
The period which the Spanish painter spent in the Court of Urbino de Federico de Montefeltro inspired him to put into practice techniques and ideas which were being experimented with in the great '.painting la_boratory' of 15th and 16th century Italy. But not only this; the painter from Palencia enthused over bnlhant architecthomc / spatial solutions which he observed, and recreated these in the architectural scenes he planned for his own works.
The background scenes, which in turn influenced other Spanish painters, also suggest an interesting hypothesis: in many cases these painted perspectives give an outline of solutions which were unknown -or had not yet been tried out- in the Spanish architecture of the time.
