Abstract

In the present article we wish to provide a brief overview of the history of F east Days and other public holidays in Jaen, from the 15th to the 19th centuries, and to illustrate examples of ephimeral architecture, constructed "ex-profeso" for sorne of these celebrations.
Although Jaen was a city of secondary importance and these works of art are not found so abundantly nor are of such importance as those to be seen in other towns, we have found a considerable number of references to and descriptions of triumphal arches, altars, superimposed facades, triumphal chariots, and other decorations which helped to create a festive atmosphere in the town during religious and other public holidays. We have also discovered several valuable photographic documents.
We analyze the character, morphology, and function of these works of art, placing them firmly in their sociocultural and historical context. Our study is divided into three parts; the 15th century, the 16th and 17th centuries and the 18th and 19th centuries, since each epoch has different features, as well as common characteristics, which distinguish it from the immediately preceding of following one.
