Abstract

While a study of European organs reveals an extraordinarily rich source both of instruments and materials, the analysis of the situation in New Spain is hampered by a great lack of data and by the fact that so man y of our organs have been destroyed.
In the present article, the author offers sorne considerations on music in New Spain and on the liturgical role played by the organ. following the lines laid down in the Papal Councils and other rules governing its use.
The author then provides examples of the existing data on organ construction and on the cabinetmaking skill needed for the cases. The architectural importancc of this instrument is also discussed. especially in different types of choirs/choirstalls which were designed according to the different needs of each religious building. She also analyzes the difTerent positions in which the organ was placed.
