Abstract

The processional monstrance of Badajoz cathedral a small silver "factory" is -a magnificent example of Spanish protorenaissance silver-work. An example of the Castillian school, finished in 1 559, it can certainly be considered to have been made by Juan del Burgo, from Val ladolid- despite the confusion as to its authorship.
The article is a rich and well-structured iconographic programme, which is obviously centred round the Eucharist. Witch its roots in the Old Testament, it reaches its richest expression in the New Testament, with graphic depictions of the events which take place. The figures of prophets, Evangelists and sybils alla combine to give greater solemnity to the Eucharistic message. And is tower-like structure also contribues to this sense of a progressive sense of the appearance of reality: from accidental thigs to substance, since the tower a clear symbol of the ascendant.
