Abstract

In the period from 1923 to 1936 the joumal «Revista de Occidente» was a publication which, from a sociocultural point of view, retlected the ideas of the refonnist, enlightened bourgeois. From the artistic point of view, however, it developed the first coherent avant-garde, clearly post-cubist line of thought as shown in the contributions made by Ortega y Gasset, Femando Vela, Manuel Abril, Corpus Barga and Sánchez Rivero. Other contributors -for exarnple Sánchez Rivero himself and Franz Roh- argued from a clearly expressionist point of view. The Review was also instrumental in introducing modem historiography, running from the articles by Wéilftlin to those by Worringer or Weber, together with psychoanalytical criticism, from Jung to Picasso, and the iconological social analysis of Alpatoff.
