Abstract

This article places Expressionism within the contest of avant-garde artistic movements in the Germany of the first third of the 20th century. In a general sense we analyze its role in German art of the period as a starting point for a revolutionary artistic movement and above alla as a personal way of interpreting modemity. the two parts in which the article is divided are those in which the original lecture was structured. In the first part we provide the historical and critical guidelines necessary for a reliable analysis of the artistic and ideological basis of this movement and we offer a tentative interpretation of the phenomenon. In the second part we undertake a historical-artistic analysis of the various movements, culminating points and the artists who contributed to the establishing of a "corpus" which can be identified, basically, with expressionist painting.
