Abstract

The stairway of the Archbishop's Palace in Seville housed one of the most important collections of paintings representative of Sevillian baroque in the 18th century. It comprised a series of tempera and canvas paintings which have now been redistributed throughout the Palace and in San Juan de Aznalfarache (province of Seville). The paintings have been attributed, with sorne doubts, to Juan de Espinal. The present study presents documentary evidence to show that this artist painted the temperapictures en 1781 and the canvases between 1778 and 1781.
