Abstract

Juan Antonio Munar, academician and architect, follower of Ventura Rodríguez and director of many of the plans made for the bishopric of Almería, has been imprisioned. In this article we publish a long letter written by Munar to King Charles 4th, petitioning for his freedom. The writer also relates the peculiar circumstances under which he was imprisioned, accused of professional negligence because of defects in the building of the church at O lula del Río. What the letter really reveals, however, is the dispute about the delimitation of professional competence and scope in the world of architecture in 18th century Spain.
