Abstract

The main altarpiece of Sorbas church (Almería), now destroyed, was a work of the late Baroque, with Rococo elements, and was created by the sculptor Francisco Gonzálvez between 1771 and 1774 when the bishop was Claudio Sanz y Torres. Disagreements between the bishop and the central authorities over, among other things, the administration of the income received from fábrica, led to the interruption of ali the works commissioned by the bishop of Almería. An examination of the dossier on the Sorbas altarpiece to be found in the Real Cámara de Castilla reveals the existence of numerous documents which allow us to appreciate this missing work.
