Abstract

In this article we attempt to provide information on the church and monastery of the Discalced Carmelites of Sabiote, which were built from the last third of the 16th century to the second decade of the 17th. We present a substantial amount of documentation, most of it hitherto unpublished, by means of which we can trace the process of the foundation of the monastery -thanks to the patronage ofF. de los Cobos and his wife M. de Mendoza- and of the construction of the buildings themselves. In this Jatter respect we would emphasize the contributions made by two great architects: Alonso de Vandelvira (to the monastery cloister), and Fray Alberto de la Madre de Dios (to the church). We conclude with a formal and stylistic description of the two buildings, which are of great interest, since they provide us with a closer undersdtanding of Carmelite architecture in Andalucía.
